“Integrity is choosing your thoughts and actions based on values rather than personal gain” Chris Karcher
Interesting quote. Building a reputation of integrity takes a lifetime however it can take only one poor decision to lose all of your hard work. The loss of trust in any relationship once lost is very hard to gain back. Even if you feel you have gained back your integrity and trust the other person will always have a seed planted in the back of their mind. It is much easier not to place yourself or your business in a position that would damage your integrity. In business it is not wise to overpromise and under deliver, it’s certainly not wise to exaggerate what you can do, if you can’t deliver what you promise simply don’t promise. In today’s world society as a whole has come to accept the “little white lies of the day”. Employees call out sick because they need to go shopping and they don’t have any more paid time off, people are late for appointments and say they were stuck in traffic when they simply just left late, employees cover up mistakes rather than accept responsibility for their actions. Just because you can justify your decision to yourself it doesn’t make it right. All of these “little white lies” can add up to a loss of integrity and trust. People are not easily fooled, actually the only person you are fooling is yourself. People want to do business with those they trust. It’s not easy telling your boss, coworker or a customer that you made a mistake. It is ok to tell them, by accepting responsibility for your actions you are building trust in the relationship. It’s ok to make a mistake, own up to it, resolve it, apologize and move past it. That is what builds character. If you left late for that meeting, say so and accept the consequences that resulted from your decision.
